Poor numeracy remains widespread in the UK and so the need to improve is more acute than ever. Too many children start to fall behind in maths early on and that failure is heightened over the years. Very many young people leave school without the numeracy skills needed for daily life and the gap between low and high achievers is greater in maths than in any other subject.
The Numeracy Audit toolkit is designed to support schools self-assess and create a manageable development plan to improve key fundamentals of numeracy placing priority on mental agility, problem-solving and reasoning to ensure outstanding progress is made by every child.

The Numeracy Audit, functions as part of a process for school support and review. It is enriched with inventive methods for school leaders to develop whole school numeracy strategies and allows leaders to recognise strengths and areas that require further improvement. The audit will give schools and MATs a breakdown report of each area and track and monitor improvements.

Uzma Southon
Uzma started her career working as a C++ programmer and became an accredited Microsoft trainer, training professionals in the Microsoft Office Suite as well as system engineers in Windows Advanced Server. This led to her embarking on a PGCE course and soon became a successful Head of Maths with outstanding results. Uzma implemented key PiXL intervention strategies and become a lead member of the PiXL Maths Associate Group, where she wrote exams and resources which provided advice for schools thus achieving a raise in progress 8 attainment.

Uzma now works as a Maths and Numeracy Advisor to several multi-academy trusts and a diverse range of schools – including Director of Mathematics for the Greenshaw Learning Trust who work with over 16 primary and secondary schools. She provides schools with a clear inspiring vision, leadership skills, CPD training, outstanding teaching, and works closely with colleagues to share and model good practice with the aim of improving progress and attainment.

Uzma has worked intensively with multi-academy trusts to build a central scheme of learning for all key stages and setup local maths hubs where leaders and practitioners can build partnerships and share good practice.
